– Students completed the Science PSSA this week.
– Additionally, students read and discussed chapter 1 of The Pearl by John Steinbeck. Students focused on the characterization of Juana, Kino, and the despicable doctor. Also, students discussed symbolism present in the first chapter of the novella.

– Eighth grade students took the Writing PSSA this week.

– Students also visited the Book Fair this week during English class. As such, they had the opportunity to purchase books and/or unique classroom supplies (e.g., an extra-long pencil).

INFORMATIONAL & PERSUASIVE WRITING: WHAT DIFFERENCES EXIST?
– Students began their review for the writing PSSA. We discussed such factors as writing five paragraphs, using well-developed concrete details, including transitions, and proof reading all work. We also discussed the differences between informational and persuasive writing.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE?
– Students read and analyzed “O Captain! My Captain!” and “I Saw Old General at Bay” by Walt Whitman. Students paid special attention to Whitman’s use of extended metaphor, dual symbolism, imagery, mood, and irony. Students also discussed the admiration of leaders and the cost of victory.

PLAY VERSUS BOOK
– Students completed two math tests and one reading test for the PSSA this week.
– Additionally, students began reading The Hitchhiker, a radio play by Lucille Fletcher. Students discussed the similarities and differences between plays and books. Students also began analyzing setting and characters.
