HW due on Monday in Google Docs – Covalent Molecules Nomenclature – is quick and easy and won’t take long to due. We then went over the Stoich Test – these questions and problems will be on the final exam coming up in 2 weeks! Students spent the rest of the period working on the molecular modeling activity. Quiz on Monday over simple lewis dot structures – see attached notes HERE

After we went over the Frayer diagrams of the 5 vocabulary words and the Lewis Dot structures that were assigned for HW, I taught the students how to draw Lewis Dot structures of covalent compounds. They then got into their lab groups and worked with molecular modeling kits to actually make the structures and identify their shape. See attached notes HERE

Today students did independent work, first making Frayer models of 5 key vocabulary words and then listening to screencasts about how to draw Lewis dot diagrams for covalent compounds. They then practiced drawing these. See class note HERE

Today we reviewed the different types of bonds – see fabulous Kahn Academy tutorial below for refresher. We did a worksheet on practicing atomic Lewis Dot structures and Lewis Dot structures for ions. Students took notes in their GD journal. HW assignment due tomorrow is a second worksheet for “Ionic Bonding Lewis Dot Structures”. See attached notes HERE

Open R lab quiz today with the clickers – if you worked on the lab on Friday and understood what you were doing, you should have gotten an A on the quiz today (just two questions).
I then shared a GD document “Chemical Bonding” with the students – our last unit for the year! I lectured and the students answers the focus questions in their journals. We learned about the 3 different types of bonding – ionic, nonpolar covalent, and polar covalent bonds. See attached notes HERE

Today I went around and quickly checked the HW due today for completion (Stoich Chapter 12 review packet). We then had a quick clicker quiz on review problems for the test on Thursday over stoichiometry and chemical reactions. I then gave an introduction to the “Determining R Lab” that we are doing tomorrow in class. Students are to do Questions 1, 2, and 3 before the lab tomorrow. See attached notes HERE

Today we went over the Stoich Quiz – students analyzed each mistake that they made on their quizzes in their electronic journal and summarized the questions that they answered correctly. This is a great review technique. They had the rest of the period to work on a review packet for Stoichiometry – it is due for HW tomorrow.
TEST over Stoich and Chemical Reactions on Thursday. R lab on Wed – prelab tomorrow.
