Temporary Drop Folder….Or Not…..

I have been fielding many questions lately about the student common drive.

“Aly, students couldn’t save to my folder on the common drive. Why?”

Please remember that we changed the rights to those folders on the student common drive. Only YOU can save files to your folder on the student common drive. Students can retrieve files from your folder, but they may not save work there. This protects the files you place in that folder — students can open them, but they cannot change them.

If you really want students to SAVE files on the student common drive (and maybe you don’t….read on), you can use the “Temporary Drop Folder,” which is one of the main folders on the student common drive. You can make a sub-folder inside that folder and name it how you like. Students may save files to any part of the “Temporary Drop Folder.”

BUT maybe you don’t really want to use the student common drive at all. In fact, there are some good reasons to make the break from the common drive altogether!

We only have access to the student common drive while connected at school. Why not post your classroom files on Moodle, and provide off-campus access to your resources? On a similar note, collecting files via the student common drive is not especially effective. Consider, 1) Students can eavesdrop on each others’ work, and 2) You can’t confidentially return graded work to the students through the common drive. If your goal is to go paperless, use Moodle and optionally, Edmodo, neither of which have those flaws.

I’m happy to help you get started. Holler, and I will make time for you.
