This project is to help students prepare for the rigors of securing post-high school/Vo-Tech education. We then study employment techniques useful for securing a position. We also discuss how potential employers will be checking the Web, Face Book pages, etc., for information on their potential employees and how what they find may have negative effects on getting the job.
We are nearing the end of this intensive assignment during which students use Power Point “outside the box” – mimicking an online site such as EBay, Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, etc. to sell two computer systems of their own design. Students create HTML text boxes and pull down menus for use on account profile and payment/shipping pages along with advanced hypertexting techniques. They then use Power Point as a photo editor to make JPEG files, which are then used to create screens for a commercial in MovieMaker. The purpose of the commercial – complete with music and video transition effects – is to advertise one of their systems. After the projects have been submitted and compiled by the instructor, they will be uploaded to a server where they can viewed and evaluated by other students. Google Docs will be used to create the survey for the peer-to-peer evaluations.
Health and Computer Apps. 1 have switched classes for 2nd semester. At this writing 65 students have successfully met the test out requirements – with another 20 or so who have qualified to do so (please see my Moodle page for the complete set of expectations). Letters will be sent home to parents notifying them of their child’s achievement. Results will also be posted outside lab 102. If your child did not test out, please encourage them to come and see me to make arrangements for retesting. The benefit is your child can leave 8th grade with a high school class already completed.
We have covered the curriculum, projects, etc. for Excel and will begin the first of the two exams on Friday, Jan.7th. Weather permitting, we should wrapped up by Wednesday, Jan. 12th. Those students who did not meet the required score of 90% may retake an exam(s) and are strongly encouraged to do so. Exam retakes can be done during SSR period. Please visit my Moodle page for complete details on the test out requirements for the Computer Apps. 1 high school class.
